Internal vs. external packaging dimensions

Choose a finished-dimension convention before calculating allowances, clearances or artwork.

Start with the product space

Internal dimensions describe the usable cavity. External dimensions describe the outside of the erected package. Mixing the two conventions is one of the fastest ways to create a package that looks correct on screen but does not fit the product.

Material has thickness

Board caliper changes the relationship between inside and outside dimensions. FoldSpec keeps the finished size, measured material and structural allowances separate so the adjustment remains visible.

Prototype the real stack

Measure the actual product, inserts and protective materials together. A digital calculation cannot predict compression, spring-back or the behavior of an unknown substrate.
